An excellent resource for anyone wanting to explore the concept of cob is "The Hand Sculpted House" by Ianto Evans.

Finding the land is the hard part, for me at least. Meka built this cottage on someone else's property. He doesn't "own" it. Ianto Evans suggests finding a landowner and offering to build such a place in exchange for 5 years rent free living. Not a bad idea, especially if you're young.

It's true, it probably took a great deal of time and work. But the work was often play, I think. And how much time do folks spend paying off a mortgage? If I recall, this house only cost about $6000 to build! And it is the most welcoming house I've ever been in.

Gorgeous. I wish I could find a house like this for myself and my dog. Most houses in the US are ugly, unimaginative, stupid looking, impractical and tasteless.

beautiful place. this is definitely something that I am greatly interested in.
By: quantumsolutions. on 21 Nov 08, 16:14:42
Gorgeous! It just occurred to me how insane it is that this would probably not meet most building code laws---a beautiful soulful loving healthful space like this, yet it is perfectly within the laws to abort a child. Somethin' just ain't right y'all. When do we get back to sanity? Peace.

how beautiful. I can't imagine how much work and time went into this. I don't think I'd be able to do it... maybe one day I'll build a cob oven or a small meditation house... maybe :) .

Great name!

It will melt in heavy rain--after a hundred years or so! The cobbing process basically creates sedmintary stone. The clay and sand form a chemical/mechanical bond and the straw hold it all together. But the real answer to your question is: a good roof and possibly a stone facing along the bottom to deflect any backsplash.
By: robbibaba. on 19 Aug 08, 02:39:00
Actually, we were just visiting. The wonderful fellow who designed and built it is Meka and his contact info is listed next to the video somewhere. He's an incredible person!

With strawbale the niche has to be cut out of the straw. It can be done with an electric carving knife (I bought one at a garage sale for a buck)or some people use a grinder. It's not too hard, as long as the bales aren't stacked so the strings face vertical. You don't want to cut the strings.

I think maybe the codes are good for developers, to keep them from building dangerous or really shoddy places. But owner-builders should have much more leeway!
By: mizpath. on 15 Aug 08, 06:09:08
Yeah ! How did we ever survive without code compliance.

Cob lasts for centuries -- there are very old cob homes in England that are still in fine shape. You just have to keep it dry, but the same can be said for wood.
