Three are 2 x matsers that I really love when they played this piece of melody. One is ZHA Fuxi (deseased), one is WU Ziying. Though it sounds easy, it is very difficult to play with its "yao" yin - the slight movement of ups + downs on the strings. I do enjoy this piece very much!

Who are some notable Gu Qin players. I first saw one of these in the movie Hero; at least i think it was one. In the fight with broken sword in the rain. Always wanted to try and play one. Incredible sounding instrument.

Miming for qin videos that are meant for professional VCDs/DVDs like this one is standard practice. I've seen a master make a mistake in one such video so I know it is fact. Also, the surroundings used are often not good for sound quality so they use this method (it is like any music video).

I took the frets off of an old electric guitar, and used a combination of bass, acoustic and electric guitar strings to achieve correct guqin tuning, minus the top string. I do not pretend to be a guqin player, and this is not a classical guqin piece, it is just a demonstration to show how this kind of instrument can be made to sound like the guqin.

Yes, guqin strings are much bigger and would not have fit though the holes in the pegs of this guitar because thee pegs are metal. I had to approximate it with bass and acoustic strings. I might make another one with a better instrument, so maybe I will make a tutorial video. Thanks!

Well I don't remember which strings I sued exactly, but the highest four strings are heavy gauge electric guitar strings, I believe the 3rd and 4th were both the low E, but in general I just matched them to guqin tuning, if you listen to guqin and then take the proper string and match it based on tension and the note. The bottom two strings I believe are the top two bass guitar strings. Again, when putting them on a normal guitar, I had to modify the bridge as it was too small for bass strings.

Oh, some tips: Guqin music uses more perfect 4ths than 5ths. 9th and 10th hui (2/3 and 3/4 of wavelength) are the most common stopped positions. Originally the qin has no markers, so harmonics were seldom used in upper antiquity pieces The qin also only had 5 strings in the beginning; google for "Shenren chang", this is the prime example.

Yes, I was thinking that it can be done easily but a bigger neck would be required, so I had to use only 6 strings and improvise. The space between the strings is of course smaller than real qin and so is very different to play. I will put more video soon!

The piece is played by Mr Wang Duo from Suzhou, student of famous Guqin master late Wu Zhaoji (???). Master Wu Zhaoji was known for his interest in meditation and Taoist health preserving methods.

It's not the age, it is the use of silk strings which make playing Qin more difficult. The sound when the fingers slide along the silk strings has been a part of the music, though in recent decades the introduction of steel string eliminated it. At the same time it has also changed the flavour of the music and the playing techniques. Revival of the traditional silk string Guqin has met with the problem of unavailability of high quality string.

on a good qin you can hear the sound from 204 to 206. it is subtle, but its there. its not like what you describe as ghost taps. true qin players do not play for aesthetic purposes and are not there to show off. in fact the qin was not at all for centuries meant to be used for playing for others.

But at 2:04-2:06, there's a different quality. The slide sounds are not a byproduct of repositioning his slide hand to facilitate a new plucked/strummed note. He's just "keeping the pulse," as we say in djembe-land. Kind of like the "ghost taps" a djembe drummer makes in between "spoken" beats. They serve a physiological as well as an aesthetic purpose, allowing the drummer to keep better time (in most cases).
