I am currently going through divorce and now I am glad to know that I am the boss instead of my lawyer. I never thought that divorce was simple but watching this video has really made me think about the complexities of divorce. I found the video to be very informative especially when you talked about documents that prove to be unenforceable. I actually thought that you could just write up a paper, have your spouse sign it and the whatever was on the paper was legal. If I ever have want to draft a document that enforces some action, I will seek out a lawyer first. I don't want to get screwed.

They are the ones that will suffer more emotionally. I did find it helpful, and it helped me to understand property divisions and such. There are so many assests that we really dont think about that could be divided amoung the couple! I've, unfortunately, gone through a divorce and really wish I'd seen your video back then. When I was in the process things were very confusing, legal terms, paperwork and the pain of the actual divorce. I appreciate how tip five really breaks down what a client should look for in a lawyer and what they should expect in return. Also, I'm going to call my lawyer up after the holidays. I have never gotten married for fear of divorce. The whole process seems so scary to me. I have had long term relationships and when we split we still had to divide assets and it would have been nice to have someone else to moderate the process. The advice about remembering that you are the boss with your attorney is good in any situation so that the outcome is best for you and not what the lawyer feels is best. I think too many people try to go it alone, especially if the divorce is amicable, and they just don't truly see what needs dividing, or how difficult their spouse may be to deal with after the divorce is final. They will both move on with their lives, and it makes sense that each should have someone in THEIR corner to make sure they have a leg up on the rest of their lives.

Great video. I liked it alot and helped me alot. A uncle of mine just went through a divorce and i actually recommended this video to him. The taping of the house (as stated in the video) helped him out a lot when it came to splitting assets. THANKS ROSEN! I would never have thought to video tape the contents of my house; its hard to think of the worst possible situations, never having gone through a divorce before, a chilling reminder of when love turns bad. I have known several families who have been torn apart by divorce. With these simple steps everyone would have been a lot better off.

The video did really make some good points, especially about copying the financial papers. As an auditor I can never stress that point to people enough. If you don't have copies, go make copies. A bank can also keep a secured box of documents as well. My only criticism would be advocating a cash advance from a credit card. Being divorced already comes hand in hand with debt.

Not enough can be said about trying to be prepared in various ways, so if divorce looks like something you can't avoid, you won't add to the misery. Copying all your relevant paperwork and video taping your home's content is priceless. Even if things by chance work out later, that's still great to have for possible insurance purposes down the road.

Great insight on how to prepare for an upcoming divorce, having gone through a divorce myself, I wish I had a couple of these tips. I also agree with the counselor suggestion and I can highly recommend talking to a counselor. Counselors can help sort things out and a counselor is a great place to talk about your issues rather than dragging your family and friends through your divorce. Leave these issues to the professionals.

I've never been in a marriage, so I suppose this is better information to have beforehand just in case. As obvious as some of it was I imagine it would be hard to think when under such pressure and it needs to be said anyway to be better safe than sorry.
