the problem with this technique is that most muggers will stand 5 - 10' away and ask you to put money/ valuables on the ground. If a mugger gets all up in someone's face like this, they might as well be using a hatchet or a knife.

10 feet? No. 7 meters, yes. I go to the range about once a week, and most people have a hard time hitting a stationary head sized target at 7 yards, but they'll definitely hit it. If you're moving at 7 meters+, you're ok. 10 feet is almost nothing, it's practically point blank as it is.

One thing about this technique, and indeed, any gun defense technique, is to remember that when the gun is fired that slide is going to blow back. If you're holding onto the slide, this might not be too much of a problem, but if your hand is where the hammer is, that slide can easily break the bones in your hand. Move quickly, and mind where your hands are, don't leave your hand hanging behind the slide if you take too long to get the gun away.

There is no precent chance. If a person is on the edge, their finger is less than an inch away from firing that gun, and a persons first reaction when they panic is to squeeze the gun, and squeeze it hard. Rookie police officers often have a problem with this themselves. You can be certain that that guy is going to go off when you're trying to do this, which is why you need to redirect.

Then you're fucked. No, actually you're best bet would be to run away. Most hoods with guns don't have the skill to shoot a running person. If you run in an unpredictable fashion, zig-zagging or whatever, they probably won't be able to hit you. I doubt Jack Bauer could hit you either.

You did not address my point at all, you just assured me of the deadliness of krav maga. Blind faith is dangerous, brother. I've worked as a police officer of Buenos Aires for years, and those knife disarms would not be effective if the attacker was non-compliant and actually trying to harm you. I have the collapsed lung to prove it. So I don't know how long you've been training, but it's dangerous to assume those techniques work if for real, especially if you think you may have to use them.

Imi did Boxing and Wrestling, but I've read that he also took mixed fighting arts. He developed the basic self-defense techniques. He's used them against multiple attackers. There are Tae Kwon Do kicks incorporated. Haim Gidon added the Ground Fighting techniques from Jujitsu. So ofcourse there is grappling and ground fighting. Imi did wrestling, so I'm sure there was wrestling incorporated. Its just not emphasized because it leaves you exposed against multiple attackers/weapons.

I think she's a civilian instructor, but I don't disagree. I just find the difference in training methods interesting. It's just unexpected to me that an army instructor should be so friendly and a civilian/female/younger instructor...not so much. Effective training is effective training, though. Lethal moves are easy to figure out for yourself; I wouldn't suggest using them unless you are almost certainly going to die if the assailant lives. Many moves, when configured correctly are enough to paralyze or kill an opponent. The Israelis can keep their secrets, but that doesn't mean others will. Thats the whole problem with Krav, the "too deadly to train" mentality. There is no such thing as a good KM fighter, Ive seen these guys. They are all sloppy as hell. In a fight against any well trained Muay Thai fighter, Kickboxer, even Boxer. They would get ktfo so fast they wouldnt get a chance to use their "too deadly" techniques. I took a 1 year course also and I know what you are talking about. The goal isn't to show off or get you into fights. The goal is to make violence a last resort, and then once you must use violence, use it smart. In real fights there are no rules. Use everything. including dirt, sharp/heavy objects... also Krav maga changes your reflexes to more effective responses. Krav maga is very powerful. I hope that I can take another course next year

I like Krav Maga... It's practices and teaches the same ideals as Ninpo Bujutsu. Basically This is the definition of what a martial art should be. War-like doing whatever it takes to end the fight as quickly as possible. Many people would say Brazilian or Gracie Jiu-jitsu is the most effective martial arts. they would be DEAD wrong. Ninpo and Krav Maga are the only two martial arts that the Gracie's didn't challenge and i see why!

Brazilian jujitsu and other forms of martial arts hold on to patients to set up moves like wrestlig; remember, kicking the groin is a good thing in krav maga. In MMA it might not be good but in a city I would much rather be train in Krav Maga, it's just the right thing to do.

I was seeing the beginning and realized that if he was in a real fight for his life either A. All 10 attackers would have been on his ass. B. If he becomes worn out by counter punching he would be overtaken by fatigue. I think what should be taught is how to take down an attacker permanently and in the least amount of time, minimal effort and with extreme force.

Yes, I suppose I was over-generalizing. I should have referred to these guys specifically 'cause I know that KM guys do spar. I made the original comment 7 months ago, so maybe then I had misinformation or was ignorant or something. Yes, sparring is the key. That's when you really learn. You learn to APPLY your techniques against someone who is trying to win as much as you are, which in turn simulates a fight situation.

I took up Krav Maga recently. Sparring is a part of every training session starting at yellow belt (with gloves, face mask, mouthpiece, shinguards, etc.). It's basically just as if you were training with a sparring partner in boxing or kickboxing. Not really full force, because you don't want your partner out of commission, but it gives you very good practice, I think, at fighting a resisting opponent who's attacking you. My footwork, defense, and offensive accuracy keep improving.

Have to agree about the Bobo comment..this system and others like it are designed for the streets. You practice them until they become instinctive. Thankfully they do teach you to deal with the adrenaline dump...you cannot stop this "fight or flight" hormone but you can learn to use it to your advantage.
